Drilling perfectly square holes (or mortises) can

Drilling perfectly square holes (or mortises) can be easily accomplished with a hollow chisel mortiser - but they can be a little tricky to use in hardwoods or for deep mortises. Here are some tricks and workarounds I use.

- Make sure your tools are sharp! Both the chisel and the drilling bit in the center need to be sharpened! The chisel is sharpened on all four sides, and inside to hit the points. You can touch up the drill bits with a diamond file (or a regular one 😆).

- Keep your chips clear! It’s very easy to overheat and burn up the chisels/bits when they get clogged with wood chips. Always keep compressed air blowing through the bits. If they overheat they will loose sharpness very fast and you will break bits.

- Adjust your clearance, Clarance! The bit and chisel need a clearance for proper chip clearing, it doesn’t matter exactly the setting, but it must be deep enough for the size of mortise and material you are using.

- On smaller machines it can be helpful to plunge several times, slowly working to full depth. This clears chips and reduces heating.

- Plunge the walls of your mortise first and come back for the waste
.
- Always mark your reference faces! Put an easy remember mark on all your pieces, this way the same side of the board is always referencing the fence. That will ensure you get the same mortise distances on all pieces.

An old timer once told me you should be able to sink a tenon with your hat, and it shouldn’t come apart if you shake and invert it. Snug but tight is the motto here! Sometimes I like them to fit tighter and seat with mallet taps, other times (like when timber framing) an easier fit is generally helpful.
Tighter doesn’t always equal stronger.
